- Haiti, located bethreen the caribbean sea and the nord atlantic ocean (West of the Dominican Republic) is a poor Island nation.
- The island of Hispaniola, the second largest island in the Caribbean, contains two separate countries; the Dominican Republic and Haiti.
- Columbus claimed Hispaniola in 1492, and it later became the major launching base for the Spanish conquest of the Caribbean, as well as the American mainland.
- Subsequently, disease and slavery were introduced by the Spanish conquistadors, and the indigenous Arawak peoples were destroyed.
- In the 17th Century, with the Spanish in control, the French established a colony on the island. The Spanish later ceded the western third of Hispaniola in 1697, which in 1804 -became known as Haiti, at the conclusion of the Haitian Slave Revolt.
- Since then, Haiti has been ruled by a seemingly-endless line of dictators; who imposed absolute obedience to their authority. That political turmoil has continually divided Haiti into a very small and wealthy elite, and a large underclass of people with little or no economic or political power.
- At the beginning of the 21st century, Haiti did struggle to establish the legitimacy of its government and to improve the economic and social conditions of its people.
- In 2004, once again, the people revolted, as they continued to search for freedom and equality - long absent in their beloved country of Haiti.
It has been many years now that Haiti has been considered as a curse among the Nations; now, the Haitian people are scattering everywhere in the world to look for a better life. The Lord our Savior has helped provide us a way to aide in removing our curse into a Blessing as it is mentioned in Zachariah 8:13;s It will come about that just as you were a curse among the Nations…so I will save you that you may become a blessing.
The destiny of Haiti is to become a blessing, and not a curse! Haiti were once the jewel of the Caribbean and now we are becoming the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. The devil has trapped the people into believing that the only way to freedom is through the voodoo rituals of our ancestors. I believe with all my heart that God is the true hope, and He loves this Nation. Also, I believe that God will use Hearts of Hope foundation to raise a new generation of hope for this Nation and to be part of His development.
The situation of poverty in Haiti has become intolerable. The people are struggling everyday trying to get food and there is no money available for educating the children. If we do not fight against the situation of poverty that is impacting Haiti today, tomorrow will be worse and we cannot expect anyone to go there, nor to remain. It seems likes a challenge for each of us in Hearts of Hope but not for the Lord who has called us to be part of it. Because of poverty many are separated from their family members who have left to find a better life by emigrating to other nations. Haiti is the poorest nation in the western hemisphere with 80% of the population living in poverty.
Haiti has been plagued with poverty, violence, corruption, dictatorship, military coups and foreign military intervention. These are adult problems but unfortunately, it is the haitian children who are the main victims. Haiti has the highest infant mortality rate and one of nine children will die before the age of five. The main causes of death in Haitian children are malnutrition, contaminated water, AIDS, cerebral palsy and wounds suffered from the crossfire of gang-related wars. It is estimated that 7% (300,000) are enslaved and suffer sexual, emotional and physical abuse, even children as young as three years old. We have a responsibility to do what we can to bring hope to them.
